Žilina is greener again, hundreds of new trees planted by the municipality

During last year's autumn and this year's spring, a total of 638 new trees were planted in Žilina. The local government planted the new linear greenery as part of the Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation project in the city of Žilina. The planting, which amounted to over 320,000 euros, took place in areas where it will have the greatest impact in the fight against climate change and carbon footprint.

The planting primarily consisted of roadside tree lines and alleys around the city center, cemeteries, and industrial zones. The tree planting was carried out in two stages, with both phases completed by the end of April. The tree species used are resilient to climate change and pests, and the health and vitality of the trees will be regularly monitored.

"The current climate situation is one of the priority topics for the city of Žilina. We are very aware of the need to respond and take actions that contribute to the fight against climate change while improving the quality of life for residents. Planting linear greenery is one of the important steps that we will continue to take in the future," said Peter Fiabáne, the mayor of Žilina. The planting of new trees in urban areas is important from an environmental, health-social, and economic perspective. Medium-sized coniferous or deciduous trees planted in urban environments and left for a period of ten years help reduce greenhouse gases, energy consumption, topsoil erosion, while also improving air and water quality and providing habitats for wildlife. Trees provide natural shade, create visual and sound barriers, and enhance the beauty of the city. Thanks to greenery and trees, the character of the place improves, costs for building cooling, rainwater drainage, and expenses for gray infrastructure are reduced.
