Purchase of containers for kitchen bio-waste

Separating biodegradable municipal waste (BRKO) is a powerful tool in the fight against climate change. This type of waste accounts for up to 50% of household waste, according to some estimates.

Without sorting, the volume of waste in landfills increases, while its decomposition produces a toxic leach and an unpleasant odor caused by landfill gas. Its main component is methane (CH4), which is a major greenhouse gas exacerbating climate change.

A major advantage of separating BRKO is the recovery of this type of waste, i.e. its treatment by biological processes into compost.

The city of Žilina uses the resulting compost in the care for green areas in the city, thus ensuring the return of life-giving components back into the soil.

The project includes the purchase of 950 units of 240-litre brown containers and their installation within the city so that as many city residents as possible will have the opportunity to sort BRKO.

Information on what does and what doesn't belong in a brown BRKO container can be found on the official website of the City of Žilina
