Forest in the urban area of Zástranie

The aim of this project is to improve the quality of the environment and to create elements of the local territorial system of ecological stability. Its implementation will lead to the revitalization of the ecosystem destroyed as a result of insect calamities in 2015 - 2019.

The aim of the city of Žilina is to create a biologically diversified and ecologically stable environment with the vision of applying nature-friendly management methods in a forest resistant to the risks of the emerging climate change.

The City's mission, in accordance with the Forest Management Plan (FMP), is to apply forest restoration and revitalization management practices while respecting current trends within the framework of the strategy and action plan for mitigation and adaptation to the climate change.

The area of interest, PKN E 1253 in the cadastre of the district of Žilina - Zástranie, is part of the suburban zone intended also for recreation of the city’s residents. The vision of the city is to develop and satisfy its specific needs and also the needs of its residents, for example a suburban forest with an important wellbeing and recreational function.

The need to adapt management models to other than productive functions of the forest is based on the need to respect the interests of society as a whole and the interests of the residents of Žilina.

The zone of suburban forests is a popular year-round intensively visited recreational zone of the city. This is also reflected in the procedures for establishing young forest stands, educational as well as other management activities planned for the coming years.

Suburban recreational zones in Žilina are exposed to intense pressures resulting from the need for accessibility of forests for the residents of the city, which corresponds to the necessity of a special approach to the way of management of forest stands serving as places of recreation for families with children, seniors, recreational tourists, runners or cyclists.

The priority of the managing subject is not only the production of timber, but above all the cultivation of stable and aesthetically pleasing stands of varied tree species and age composition, which is considered in the adjustment of afforestation and silvicultural practices.
