About project

The project "Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change in the City of Žilina" aims to implement measures in the city of Žilina to increase the city's capacity to adapt to climate change.

Over the next three years, the city will undertake a number of measures aimed in particular at reducing the vulnerability of the most vulnerable groups - children and the elderly.

Climate change in the environment of Žilina is mainly manifested by an increased air temperature during the summer period, a variability of precipitation and an alternation of dry and short rainy periods. Some of the project's measures therefore address the reduction of overheating in urbanized areas, for example by extensive outplanting of linear trees, the addition of mobile greenery to areas where planting conventional greenery is not possible, or building a green roof on the building of the Municipal Office in Žilina.

In addition to that, a revitalized space with a meadow and greenery will be developed in front of the Municipal Office in Žilina during the implementation of the project, where clients will be able to relax on benches.

Function of relaxation and water-retaining will be fulfilled by the St. George's Park in the Trnové district, which completion of is envisaged by the project. There will also be a playground, benches and a stage that can be used for cultural events. Replanting of a part of the forest in the urban area of Zástranie and revitalization of a selected area within the Forest Park Chrasť will also contribute to climate change mitigation. Thanks to the project, the city will also solve the problem with a shortage of vehicles for the delivery of meals for the elderly, with the big plus being that it will be two new electric vehicles.

As part of a comprehensive climate change mitigation solution, the project also focuses on waste management. Thanks to the grant, the municipality will purchase some of the necessary containers for the collection of biodegradable waste, which will be placed in selected locations in the city. One of the other project activities will be reducing the energy intensity of the kindergarten building on Andrej Kmeťo Street.

An important part of the project is also the creation of an Adaptation Strategy to Climate Change of the City of Žilina. This is an important document whose main objective will be to improve the city's preparedness to face the adverse effects of climate change by designing appropriate adaptation measures.
